In 1989, St. Paul’s Hospital installed the first MRI machine in Hong Kong. There have been major advances in technology since the earlier days. The current MRI system , GE Signa Horizon 1.5T Echospeed with Excite platform was installed in late 2002 . This is a multi-channel system capable of parallel imaging . We can image the body tissues, organs and systems faster and in more detail than before . Finer structures can now be clearly discerned. Shorter examination time increased patient comfort. MRI has wide application in brain and spine as well as musculo-skeletal ( muscles /tendons/bones/joints ) imaging . No ionizing radiation is used with MRI scanning making it particularly useful in children. Doctors are able to make more accurate diagnosis quickly enabling them to make timely management decisions on their patients.
The first CT scanner in Hong Kong was installed in our department in 1997. Our hospital takes the lead in introducing new medical technology to improve our services to patients . Our department currently has our fifth CT Scanner . The state of the art , 64-slice Siemens Sensation Cardiac 64 . The latest CT scanner was installed in late 2004 . The machine is capable of generating high resolution images quickly . The heart can be scanned in a little over 10 seconds in a single breath-hold . Routine demonstration of the coronary arteries of the heart ( coronary CTA ) is now possible . CT scanning is an integral and indispensable part of the diagnostic workup of patients. Apart from the usual imaging of the brain , neck , chest ( lungs ) , abdomen and pelvis . The current CT scanner is particularly useful in the study of the blood vessels of the body ( CTA ) , the large bowel ( Virtual colonoscopy ) and the airways ( Virtual bronchoscopy ) .
