The Hong Kong Prostate Centre was established in 1992 which aims to provide more specialised or alternate investigational procedures and treatment to give doctors and patients a wider choice in the management of prostatic and urological problems.
Over the years, the Centre has acquired the following facilities:
1. Uroflowmetry and Urodynamic Investigations 2. Flexible Cystoscopy 3. Transrectal Ultrasound of Prostate + TRUS Biopsy 4. Cryotherapy and for Ca prostate and renal tumours 5. Germany made Biolitec Red Laser 980 for vaporizing laser prostectomy
In early 2002, the centre further enhances its service with the provision of Cryosurgery for the treatment of organ confined Ca of prostate. In particular, the 3rd generation “SeedNet” Cryotherapy system is the first in Hong Kong, as well as in Asia. It involves the insertion of ultra-thin 17G needles via the perineum under real time transrectal U/S control, and ablates the tumour gland by “Freezing”. The treatment requires only 1 to 2 days of hospital stay. The same technique is used for small renal tumours in a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
In 2007, the centre is the first to acquire the new Biolitec red laser 980 for vaporization laser prostectomy: a procedure that reduces bleeding during operation and allows patient to be discharged home early.
